A festival volunteer
is
a gancer macher,
a true VIP among volunteers!

Macher means “important guy” in Yiddish: one who not only “does” things, but is even bubbling with activity. S/he is a dynamic figure – not only does s/he have great ideas, but also strives to implement them. In Yiddish, “a macher” refers to an important person who has an impact on those around him – a true influencer.

Macher is also a volunteer of the Jewish Culture Festival, who helps us create the festival in the summer and supports our Cheder and office during the year. All Machers are also invited to develop their own projects to learn, gain experience and make new friends.

The volunteer program is organized with the support of the European Union through the European Solidarity Corps. It allows us to receive volunteers for short-term stays, as well as long-term ones. We can also be an institution that sends volunteers to various organizations abroad.

The Machers are a very international and multicultural group – in addition to Poles, they include volunteers from Germany, Italy, Israel, Hungary, Ukraine, Azerbaijan, Moldova, Pakistan, India, Belarus, Congo, Peru, Spain, France, Netherlands, Nigeria, Jordan, China, UK, Mexico, Turkey, Afghanistan, or Portugal.

They come to Krakow not only for the duration of the festival itself, but for  a whole month, during which they get to know each other, they learn about the Jewish culture, Krakow and Kazimierz, and help prepare for the JCF – all within the framework of a project supported by the European Solidarity Corps. For a whole month, Krakow becomes their second home, and the other volunteers and coordinators become their closest people.
