Two Goals, One City: Jewish Sport in Krakow (PL)

In pre-war Kraków, sport was not merely innocent fun. Its aim was to shape a new kind of person: fit, self-aware, and physically and intellectually strong. In Jewish sports clubs, therefore, it was not only muscles that were exercised, but also civic-mindedness, identity and modernity. During the walk, we will talk about Jewish sport in Kraków: about sports societies, the Maccabiah Games, the idea of physical education, and how sport brazenly invaded the city’s backyards, much to the despair of the mothers of grubby children. At the heart of this story are two great Krakow clubs — Jutrzenka and Makkabi — and their connections with football: both past and very much present. We’ll talk about ideas, pitches, rivalry, everyday city life and football as one of the most vibrant languages of modern Krakow.
