Tales from the Gate. Lublin (PL / EN)

The lecture will be a story about the Grodzka Gate in Lublin as a place, an institution and a practice of remembrance. The Grodzka Gate, situated between the former Christian and Jewish quarters, becomes a symbol of transition and encounter, and bears responsibility for this story. The focus of the event will be on the activities of the ‘Grodzka Gate – Teatr NN’ Centre: documenting the memory of Jewish Lublin, working with eyewitness accounts, educational, artistic and performative projects, and the creation of an Archive understood as a living medium of contact with the past.  

The lecture fits into the festival’s understanding of the gate as a metaphor for transition, encounter and the intertwining of times. The Grodzka Gate will be presented as a liminal space where the city’s history is condensed into the voices of witnesses, documents, photographs and the artistic works of Tomasz Pietrasiewicz. It is a story of a city whose Jewish world was destroyed, yet whose traces continue to shape the imagination, ethics and memory of contemporary Lublin. 

Dr Łukasz Stypuła (the “Brama Grodzka – Teatr NN” Centre in Lublin)
PhD in humanities in the field of religious studies and a historian specialising in Jewish studies; he studied at the Jagiellonian University in Kraków; he currently works at the “Brama Grodzka – Teatr NN” Centre in Lublin; a fellow of the Institutum Judaicum at the University of Tübingen, The European Institute for Jewish Studies in Sweden in Stockholm, the National Science Centre and the Lanckoroński Foundation. His research focuses on the Jewish quarter in Lublin, Hebrew poetry from the Al Andalus period, Jewish philosophical thought in the Middle Ages and Christian Kabbalah. He has conducted his research in Sweden, Germany, Italy, Israel and Poland.
