Sounds of the City: Yiddish Music and Jewish Memory in Kazimierz (PL)

A Walking and Singing Tour with Professor Agi Legutko and Cantor Jeff Warschauer  

Come walk and sing with us as we explore the rich cultural heritage of Jewish Kazimierz through music, space, and memory. The tour of significant sites in Jewish Kazimierz, enriched by participatory Yiddish songs and melodies, will place special emphasis on Kazimierz’s own bard, Mordechai Gebirtig, whose songs serve as an intimate archive of the neighborhood and its people.  

Interwoven with the physical landscape, the musical repertoire evokes everyday family and work life, childhood, love, Shabbat and holiday observance, assimilation, rejoicing and lamenting, the passage of time, tragedy, and renewal. Together, the sites and songs offer a profound reflection on the Jewish historical experience and the continuation of Jewish life and culture in Krakow and throughout Poland. Hearing songs among stones invites participants to hear and feel history.   

The tour will last about 2 hours .
