Gateway to the Temple and the Heavens: The Symbolism of the Synagogue as a Heritage Site (PL)

During this workshop, we will examine the various roles the synagogue plays in Jewish life, exploring what its architectural and interior elements symbolize and the traditions they reference.

The synagogue is often perceived as a gateway to the heavens because it serves as a house of prayer. Beyond that, it serves as a portal into the history of the Jewish people, spanning from antiquity through various eras to the present day. Every synagogue building can be viewed as a gateway to the history of the specific community that built and frequented it. Within its walls lies a story of people and their identities, their sense of belonging, and their local and historical ties. The architectural design, materials, and interior decor will all serve as clues in our investigation.
