Gates of Knowledge – Jewish Libraries in Pre-War Poland (PL)

During the interwar period, modern Jewish libraries and reading rooms operated in many Polish towns and cities. Although often linked to specific communities (e.g. political ones), these were places open to the general public, which sought to meet the real needs of their users. They offered books that helped to better understand the surrounding, non-Jewish world, and also supported education and professional development. However, they were not limited solely to making their collections available. They also organised a rich cultural and educational life — ranging from lectures and author talks to literary discussions, as well as theatrical and musical events — which helped to broaden  theknowledge and horizons of their readers. At the same time, they played an important role in Jewish public life, helping to maintain contact with their own tradition, history and religion.
